Our Kelp forest project in the North Sea will create Kelp forests in the space between offshore wind turbines.

Kelp is a kind of seaweed. In the North Sea, Kelp is home to highly diverse ecosystems which have suffered sharp declines in the past decades. We plan to use offshore wind parks for the cultivation of Kelp forests in the North Sea.

Offshore wind turbines are built up to several kilometers apart, leaving much space for protected marine ecosystems. A first step is to cultivate Kelp forests. The immediate effect is a high Carbon Capture Potential due to the quick growth of Kelp which is almost 10 times higher than that of land forests. Cultivating such ecosystems in offshore wind parks turns the CO2-neutral energy from renewables into CO2-negative energy!

Kelp forests are home to highly diverse ecosystems. Promoting Kelp growth in the North Sea will potentially lead to increased biodiversity and is a first step to curing our devastated oceans from the damage Humanity has caused in the past century.

But this is still only the beginning. The quick growth of Kelp enables us to harvest surplus material which can be used for a wide range of applications.

Kelp contains many useful nutrients like proteins, fats, carbohydrates for food and fertilizer production, minerals, vitamins and other substances for food supplements, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals and oils for biogenic fuel production.
